Massage in its various modalities has been used around the world as a method of healing for thousands of years. In many cultures ancient bodywork that has been practiced over time has been connected with sacred traditions and a holistic approach to healing.
Hawaiian temple massage
(also known as Ka Huna or Lomi Lomi massage), originated in the south pacific region and is one of the many traditional healing hands-on practices. This style of massage aims to restore the interconnected balance between the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies through intentional bodywork.
Ka Huna and Lomi Lomi massage originated as a part of the sacred rituals practiced by the Hawaiian Kahunas (the wise elders), used during spiritual ceremonies and a persons rites of passage. At the core of this bodywork is the Aloha philosophy of peace, empathy, and mutual respect, a way of life bringing you closer to your heart. It is believed to enhance the experience of life on a deeper and more fulfilling level. The term ‘Huna’ translates to secret (meaning wisdom).
Today Ka Huna & Lomi Lomi massage has evolved to embody a blend of ancient Huna wisdom and philosophy passed down through time, combined with the therapeutic techniques of modern massage. Each bodywork session aims to honour the body as a temple and to invigorate the mind, body and spirit.
Ka Huna and Lomi Lomi has been experienced by some as a gateway to spiritual and emotional realization, release and healing, as well as providing the release of physical tension that may be contributing to pain or limited movement within the physical body.
Each person will experience the Hawaiian style bodywork differently. While some may have a personal intention to connect with during the session, others may simply feel the desire to surrender to the deeper layers of their own consciousness and soothe the nervous system.
Ka Huna and Lomi Lomi massage may support you by:
- Supporting or alleviating pain management. The dynamic flowing strokes, deep tissue (where required), joint mobility movements and stretches are all techniques that encourage a healthy relationship between muscles, joints, tendons and bones, thus improving the fluid movement of the body.
- Helping re-align the physical body harmoniously with the energy systems flowing within it. Establishing a connection with the deeper layers of self and your human interconnectedness with all of life.
-Creating space for reflection, enhancing self, and body awareness, provide focus and clarity around where we may be ‘holding’ or feeling ‘limited’ and ‘stuck’.
- Supporting recovery and your healing process (both physical and emotional). Managing chronic pain or injuries whilst energetically releasing what no longer serves you.
- Supporting and stimulating the lymphatic system. Increasing lymphatic efiiciency – long flowing strokes aid in the reduction of fluid retention by moving the bodies lymph and helping to reduce swelling. Also useful during times of detox.
- Boosting the release of happy hormones promoting positive feelings of wellness, happiness and pleasure as well as reducing stress. (Endorphins, serotonin and oxytocin).
- Improving circulation by moving blood through congested areas. Activating the bodies ‘chi’, the energy life force that flows through the body - moving stubborn energy blockages.
- Managing stress through relaxation. By activating the parasympathetic nervous system the body is prompted to return to its natural way of breathing – lowering blood pressure and promoting digestion and improving quality of sleep.
